Bangalore: Considering the space crunch and the need to curb horizontal growth, emphasis should be given to vertical growth to cater to the housing needs oof citizens, said CM Siddaramaiah on Thursday.

In order to meet this requirement, Bangalore Development (BDA) has taken the initiative of providing at least 30,000 flats this year. Participating in the inaugural programme for selecting beneficiaries through a lucky draw system, the CM said the lottery system helps maintain transparency in the allotment process and about 3,000 flats constructed at 16 locations of the city will be allotted this year.  Lack of vision, poor planning and thrust on horizontal development has already created havoc in rapidly growing city making even the traffic chaotic, he added.

Vertical growth with adequate facilities should be the key to solving congestion and space crunch problems, he said, adding, steps should be taken towards developing satellite towns around the city as it will take the pressure off Bangalore.

“Due to influx of people, housing needs to have grown exponentially. During Janata Darshan, 25 per cent of the complaints pertain to housing needs. BDA is making efforts to solve this problem and will make arrangements for an additional 3,000 flats by March 2014.  The BDA has been directed to give possession to 8,813 allottees at Arkavathy Layout by March next year,” the CM added.

As promised in the Budget, the BDA has been working towards fulfilling housing needs of Bangaloreans. Besides housing, flyovers and underpasses, the BDA, with financial assistance from Japan International Co-operation Agency, is developing a 65-km Peripheral Ring Road (PRR), Siddaramaiah  added.
